Cockatoo Calling was composed in 2018 after I saw the wonderful ‘Muses Trio’ perform a concert of all-female works in Byron Bay. People often point out that Cockatoos don’t really call, but look, I was more going for alliteration rather than biological accuracy here!
This piece is through-composed, and explores the Lydian mode to create an open, light feeling. Frequent time signature changes and cross rhythms feature throughout the piece, with these techniques used to develop motives throughout the piece.
This piece would be suitable for HSC Australian Music of the Past 25 years, and is roughly of a Grade 6+ standard
